Ash 1 – Fracturing

Before I cut Ash 1, I marked its surface with a simple grid. The measured lines introduced a subtle order to the organic ash surface, creating a dialogue between structure and residue. They began to echo ploughed furrows and field boundaries — human marks laid over earth.

When the canvas was cut along these lines, the work shifted from a single surface into dispersed fragments. What had been whole became distributed, carrying with it traces of land, labour and memory.

From these fragments came hundreds of small laminated canvases, made into bookmarks. Left in places to be found, taken or gifted, the work continues to travel — carrying its traces beyond the original site through simple acts of exchange.
